I can't really speak for other sites but here it comes down to my inability to design anything worthwhile. But i'll continue to try and improve it.
i really don't think that, from a design perspective, you're going to do anything bad by making snippets of news posts longer than twitter posts.
Thanks @ your other comment. :)
i ask, because from my perspective, the large amount of space for content is being given to uninformative aspects.
I'm currently experimenting with the frontpage news and featured look tho.
the image you've shown looks like an improvement. it gives users quicker access to more abundant content, while still giving that highlighted content a significant area.
i can't yet upload files, so here's a quick edit of the image you provided. you would still have a healthy amount of white space, and you maintain the separation of news & other content boxes.
one other thing you may consider is changing the order of home_left & home_right divs, so that at < 1100px width the news will be displayed before the sidebar stuff.
I'm reworking most of the front page currently, that includes the order of home_left & right. I'm gonna significantly reduce the waste of space on mobile so scrolling over the news to get to the sidebar stuff shouldn't be an issue anymore (which was the main reason for the current order).
One of the problems with that new frontpage design i see is that its not easy to see in wich direction the posts are to be read, you have to look at the dates to see that its left to right top to down (of course that is a widely used format, but it still isnt obvious on the first view).
Also why are the dates from right to left?
Changed it.
I think that problem isn't that "problematic" considering its just 2 columns and posts are the same height (compared to something like google plus with 3 columns and i still have no clue how the posts are ordered there). Ideally first time viewers should look at the featured posts first anyway, if i still didn't manage that i'll give up. :D
