Quake celebrates its 30th anniversary
Today marks the 30th anniversary of the original Quake. On June 22, 1996, id Software released the first version of the game. It included the first episode and was available for download directly from the studio's official website. The full release followed a month later on July 22.
Quake brought significant technical and gameplay changes to the first-person shooter genre. It introduced true 3D environments and popularized fundamental mechanics such as vertical mouse aiming and rocket jumping. These innovations helped shape the modern shooter genre and established Quake as a foundational title in the history of esports.
