SyncError has announced in the official Quake Discord server that he will resume work on Quake Champions on Monday, 31st August 2026. He will spend four weeks wrapping up the existing 1.31 update.
"Back to work on Monday, for four weeks to wrap up the 1.31 update."
The announcement received a positive response from community members, but SyncError clarified that it is not a new contract or a permanent return to the project. He said that he had remained an id Software employee and was now officially staying for longer, although the extension only "delays the inevitable."

In another reply, he wrote:
"Not a contract, I'm just not being laid off (yet)."
SyncError also limited expectations for the four-week period. He confirmed that he is not working on balance changes and said there is not enough time to implement, test and release public lobbies. His current task is to complete work already underway for the 1.31 update.

In July, SyncError was reported among the id Software employees affected by the wider Xbox layoffs. His latest comments clarify that his employment had not yet ended: the additional four weeks are an extension rather than a new contract or rehire. Following reports of his planned departure, the community launched a petition asking for his return to Quake Champions. It reached 1,000 signatures less than three weeks later.
